October to March: the main swell season

Autumn and winter bring the most consistent North Atlantic swell. Experienced surfers come for the long right-hand point breaks, while coaches select sheltered beaches and smaller peaks for progressing surfers. If you are a beginner, this season can still work well when your surf camp provides daily transport and chooses the spot around the forecast.

Pack a light layer for early mornings and evenings. A suitable wetsuit, warm shower and unhurried breakfast make multiple surf days much more comfortable.

April to June: warm weather and approachable waves

Spring is a strong all-round choice. Conditions are often less powerful than midwinter, days are longer and the atmosphere is calmer after the seasonal peak. Beginners gain more chances to practise in manageable white water, while intermediates can work on green-wave positioning.

July to September: a beginner-friendly summer

Summer commonly brings smaller surf and warm, bright days. It suits first lessons, families and travellers combining surfing with yoga or excursions. Swell can still arrive, so no month guarantees a particular wave size. A local coach should make the final call each morning based on tide, wind and ability.

How to choose your dates

Choose winter for powerful point-break potential, spring for balance, and summer for gentler learning conditions. If your dates are fixed, book a programme with transport rather than accommodation beside only one beach. Mobility is what turns a changing forecast into a productive surf week.

Frequently asked questions

Can beginners surf in Taghazout in winter?

Yes. Coaches can use sheltered beaches and smaller peaks, although conditions must be assessed each day.

Do I need to bring a wetsuit?

You can bring your own, but a surf package that includes equipment is easier for most travellers. Ask which thickness is provided for your dates.
