Moroccan Hammam After Surfing: What First-Time Visitors Should Know
A hammam is a bathing tradition, not simply a hotel spa treatment. Experiences range from neighbourhood public baths to private, guided rituals. Knowing the format before you arrive makes the visit more comfortable and respectful.

What happens in a hammam
A typical visit moves through warm, steamy bathing, cleansing with black soap and exfoliation using a textured glove. Private venues usually guide each step; public hammams require more independence and local etiquette.
Plan gently after the ocean
Hydrate first and avoid an aggressive scrub on sunburned, irritated or broken skin. If you feel unwell, overheated or have a medical condition affected by heat, skip the steam and seek appropriate advice. A hammam should feel restorative, not like an endurance test.
What to bring and ask
Ask whether towels, sandals and toiletries are supplied and whether the experience is private or shared. Your host can explain local customs and help you choose a venue that matches your comfort level.

Should I visit a hammam immediately after surfing?
Rinse, hydrate and allow your body to settle first. Do not use strong exfoliation on damaged or sunburned skin.
Are hammams private?
Some are private and guided; traditional public hammams are shared. Confirm the format before booking.
